Getting Settled in Alberta, Canada: Essential Steps for International Students

Congratulations on your move to Canada! As an international student, there are several important steps you need to take after securing your accommodation. These essential steps, ranging from setting up your phone to obtaining necessary documents, will help ensure a smooth transition to your new life in Canada.


Cell Phone plan

You'll need a new SIM card and phone plan once you arrive to Canada. Compare phone plans from the following phone providers before purchasing your SIM: Bell, Rogers, Telus, Virgin Mobile, Chatr, Koodo, Freedom, or Fido.

Once you have a SIM card, you'll need to purchase a phone plan from the phone provider of your choice or purchase a top up of minutes from your local grocery store. Phone plans with your own phone can allow you to enter a monthly contract of a minimum $35 monthly charge and higher based on your data and calling needs .

  3. Proof of residence (lease)

Bank Account

To open a bank account, you need your study permit and passport and to show proof of residence. You can get your credit card after you get your bank card with proof of income. Getting your credit card will require an appointment. Compare your best banking options from among RBC, Scotiabank, TD Bank, ATB, BMO, HSBC, CIBC, KOHO, and Tangerine and more.

Documents:

  1. Study permit

  3. Proof of residence (lease or utility bill)

  4. Phone number

SIN Identification card

Your social insurance number (SIN) allows you to work. To apply for your SIN, make sure you have each of the four documents below.

Documents:

  1. Work permit issued by IRCC or CIC

  2. Study permit issued by IRCC or CIC which indicates the permit holder “may accept employment” or “may work” in Canada.

  3. Visitor record issued by IRCC or CIC showing that you are authorized to work in Canada.

  4. Diplomatic identity card and a work authorization issued by Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development

And additionally, one of these documents:

  • a passport (Canadian or foreign)

  • a Canadian provincial or territorial ID card or driver’s license

  • any other Canadian government-issued ID

Alberta Health Care card

If you are enrolled as a full-time student, health insurance package is included in your tuition and most school will give you the option to opt out, if you're covered by private health insurance. Your Alberta Health care card is mandatory to access free healthcare once you gain your work permit and are no longer a full-time student.

  2. Study permit

  3. Proof of residence


Cost: Free

If you also drive, you will need to get your Alberta ID card.
